When Transparency Fails: Bias and Financial Incentives in Ridesharing Platforms

چکیده
Providing transparency into operational processes can change consumer and worker behavior. However, it is unclear whether beneficial with potentially biased service providers. We explore this in the context of ridesharing platforms where early evidence documents bias similar to what has been observed traditional transportation systems. Platforms responded by reducing through removing information about riders’ gender race from ride request presented drivers. following change, may still manifest driver cancelation after a accepted, at which point rider’s picture displayed. Our primary research question extent gender, race, perception support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) rights impact rates. investigate large field experiment on major platform Washington, DC. By manipulating rider names profile pictures, we observe drivers’ behavior patterns accepting canceling rides. results confirm that stage eliminated. acceptance, racial LGBT biases are persistent, while find no biases. also peak times moderate (through increased pay drivers) or exacerbate (by signaling there many riders, allowing drivers be more selective) these moderating effect timing, lower rates non-Caucasian riders. do not riders signal community. Incentives in ridesharing with deficit control
This paper proposes a novel market-based system for ridesharing, where commuters are matched based on their declared travel constraints, the number of available seats (which could be zero), and their costs. Based on this information, the system then designates commuters to be either drivers or riders, finds appropriate matches, and calculates rewards for drivers and payments for riders. We show...

Increasing the regulatory environment and expanding the scope of the regulatory standards for financial reporting has, over the past few years, reduced the cost of representation and information asymmetry and increased the level of corporate disclosure of corporate financial statements. But one of the endogenous dimensions of quality that prevents the disclosure of financial statements is a mat...

Minimizing Bias in Selection on Observables Estimators When Unconfoundness Fails We characterize the bias of propensity score based estimators of common average treatment effect parameters in the case of selection on unobservables. We then propose a new minimum biased estimator of the average treatment effect. We assess the finite sample performance of our estimator using simulated data, as wel...
متن کاملSpatio-Temporal Pricing for Ridesharing Platforms
Ridesharing platforms match drivers and riders to trips, using dynamic prices to balance supply and demand. A challenge is to set prices that are appropriately smooth in space and time, in the sense that drivers will choose to accept their dispatched trips, rather than drive to another area or wait for higher prices or a better trip. We introduce the Spatio-Temporal Pricing (STP) mechanism. The...
متن کاملTransparency among Peers and Incentives∗
The paper studies the effect of transparency among peers on the principal’s cost of providing incentives. Using directed graphs to represent peer information we show that under complementarity the cost of providing incentives is decreasing with the level of transparency within the organization. We also investigate the role of the architecture of the information in boosting incentives. In arguin...
